THE Burton Albion Football Club annual end of season awards night for the 2016/17 season, saw winger Lucas Akins pick up the award for Community Player of the Season.
Community sponsor Ashfield Health Care were in attendance to present Lucas with the award, following his recent achievement of winning the PFA Community Champion Award.
Following receiving his second award for his work in the community, Akins said: “It’s always nice to get out and mingle with the community, you see a lot of familiar faces but with the club evolving quite quickly. Getting up the leagues quite quickly it’s nice to see the site develop (3G pitch) and more new faces and obviously venturing out to new schools, it’s great. I’ve been at this club for three seasons now so I’m hopefully here for a bit longer. It’s just great to be involved in it, I think all the boys enjoy the community appearances. Even on days off not many clubs have players come in to do their duties but a lot of lads come in on their days off to so it’s important that these are fulfilled but that the boys enjoy it as well. The gaffer tries to sign not only good footballers but good people with good values and it’s important that we pass that down to the younger generations.”
Andy Taylor, Head of Community, said: “We had no choice but to give it to Lucas really! He has really stood out this year and we are so grateful to have such a great professional and role model at our club. He’s one of the nicest guys that you could wish to meet in football and ever since he joined the club, he has gone above and beyond during his appearances to make them that extra bit enjoyable for the participants.”
