SOME of Burton’s most charitable organisations are joining forces to promote organ donation awareness.
In an initiative spearheaded by Burton Hospital, employers are being urged to spread the word among employees about signing up to become a donor.
Burton Albion Community Trust is the first employer in the town to sign up to the scheme.
The trust signed an understanding with the Organ Donation Committee at Burton’s Queen’s Hospital as part of a bid to raise awareness and help save lives.
Andy Taylor, head of Burton Albion Community Trust, said he was ‘thrilled’ to be on board and that the trust was ‘fully behind’ the initiative.
Mr Taylor, 33, said: “We will be providing our support by promoting organ donation within our workforce.
“We have more than 35 staff so it will go through them to raise awareness.
“We do participate in lots of partnerships with the Hospital and we obviously have a health agenda so it is a good fit.
“What the club is trying to do is really commendable and they have our full support. We are seen as a key player in the public eye and it is important that we use our brand to raise awareness and target employees.”
William Saunders, Chair of the Organ Donation Committee, said: “It is really important to have a platform like the trust to build on. It strengthens the likelihood of helping others. We want employers in the area to get on board with the initiative and encourage people to sign up to the organ donor register and promote it. We are delighted that they are spreading the word.”
As part of its role in encouraging people to sign up to the organ donor register, the Organ Donation Committee from is urging families to talk about donation. It is also keen to sign understandings with as many major employers in the area as possible.
Employers who take part in the scheme will sign a contract to say that they will encourage all existing employees to sign up to the register as part of the induction process of new staff.
They also agree to encourage and to promote organ donation to customers and suppliers and to appoint an organ donation champion to actively support the understanding.
The Committee will also provide support and advice to the employers who take part.
