A fine, cold January evening saw near neighbours Burton and Etwall meet. This was not the first time that the teams had played each other but it was their first encounter in the Derbyshire League. From kick off the match was played at a good pace with both teams trying hard to adhere to the rules. This they managed, aside from the occasional overly robust challenge and spot of running which the ref was quick to spot. In the end it wasn’t too long before Pete Wood slotted home for Burton to give them a 1 – 0 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Burton continued to enjoy the majority of the possession pressing hard and it wasn’t long before Mick Rees shot doubled Burton’s lead. Soon after, Burton pulled even further ahead when Derek Wainwright got his reward for his hard work upfront for Burton. At this stage it looked as though Burton might run away with the match and that might have been the case but for some good work from Paul in the Etwall goal. At the halfway point Burton made two substitutions and Etwall were quick to capitalise on the resulting disorganisation with a fine goal from Simon giving them hope as the score became 3 – 1. Almost straight afterwards Burton conceded a seemingly innocuous free kick from which Etwall scored to make it 3 -2. Etwall were right back in it and Burton looked to be rocking but they managed to get some shape back and when a fine shot from Nigel Powlson rocketed off the far post Steve Russell was there to calmly finish and restore Burton’s two goal cushion at the end of the third quarter. The final quarter was much tighter and the final score of 4- 2 was a fair reflection of a good game.
