In September 2014, the Respect Burton programme was rolled out across the local community after Burton Albion Community Trust, in partnership with Burton Youth for Christ (BYFC), successfully bid for funding. Burton Breweries Charitable Trust (BBCT) sponsored the programme with £108,000 over three years; a tremendous commitment and the largest they have made to date. Respect Burton is an innovative programme which focuses on prevention rather than reaction, with an overriding aim to give young people the knowledge to make their own decisions in school and wider society. To achieve this aim there are two initiatives which form Respect Burton; ‘Our Space’ and ‘Our Time’.
Our Space is delivered at 8 local primary schools in deprived wards, engaging over 700 children aged 9 – 11 years old. As part of the programme each class have 5 bespoke lessons across 5 weeks. Subjects taught cover difficult topics such as; drug and alcohol awareness, e-safety, and knife crime. Meanwhile, topical issues such as politics and world news are included to give children an understanding of current affairs, and character building lessons such as, aspirations, and teamwork and respect, aim to instil core values. The aim of all of these sessions is to give children the knowledge and understanding of the increasing responsibility they have for their own safety and destiny as they grow up.
Working with Key Stage 3 students this is a targeted and student led programme, helping 13 young people across two local secondary schools. The programme has three strands:
- Education: Children follow a set programme of work by MyLife focusing on communication and enterprise. Informative workshops are delivered to meet the needs of the group.
- Extra-curricular: This is an opportunity for students to choose their activities and have fun in a safe environment and discuss any issues with their mentor.
- School Break: In school breaks students are invited to a variety of activities including; bowling, paint-a-pot, and outdoor activities.
To celebrate the students’ hard work and personal development throughout the year, they are invited to a 4-day residential break which culminates with a graduation evening.
