Burton Albion Community Trust (BACT) announces that Head of Community, John Widdowson, will be stepping down from his role at the beginning of August.
Having first joined the Trust in 2014, John has dedicated over a decade to serving the local community, contributing to countless impactful projects and initiatives. In 2022, he left to take on a new opportunity with Wrexham AFC, before returning to BACT in January 2024. His journey has been marked by a deep commitment to the town he calls home and a passion for making a difference through sport, education, and outreach.
“It was always my dream to become Head of Community,” said John Widdowson. “To lead a charity filled with incredible people and meaningful projects has been a true honour. Returning in 2024, I was reminded of the strength and dedication of the team here, who continue to make a difference every single day.”

The decision to step down is a personal one, made to prioritise his physical and mental health after a demanding and intense period.
“The role of Head of Community is incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with significant responsibility and pressure. This past year has taught me a lot about myself and the importance of balance. I believe now is the right time to step aside and allow someone new to bring fresh energy and perspective.”
His departure comes at a pivotal moment, as BACT and Burton Albion FC prepare to bring to life a new and ambitious community strategy. “John’s decision creates an opportunity for new leadership to help shape and deliver this exciting next chapter.”
