BURTON Albion mens first team stars Adrian Mariappa and Deji Oshilaja took part in a Q&A about racism and hate crime today.
The session was the end of day of workshops hosted by BACT and education charity “Show Racism The Red Card”, a charity that informs and educates everyone around the subject of racism.
During the Q&A the two were asked tough questions about their experiences of racism and what needs to be done to combat the subject.
Afterwards the midfielder and defender took time to sign posters and pose for selfies with the excited youngsters.
Adrian Mariappa said: “It’s been a brilliant session and I’m glad to play my part. There were some tough but excellent questions in there and I hope the kids have gone away with a lot of knowledge regarding racism and hate crime.”
School Sport Manager Katie Johnson said: “The kids have loved today and having the players give up their time to visit was amazing for them too. Hearing the players go through their experiences of the subject I hope will stay with them for a long time.”
Show Racism the Red Card campaign worker Seth Ejukwu said: “It’s been an amazing event. This is one of many events we do where we go into schools and do different workshops on stereotypes and hate crimes.
“We also showed them the show racism the red card educational video where they see ex and current professional footballers talking about their experiences of racism and how to report it.
“It was very kind of Burton Albion FC to allow us to have access to two incredible first team players and they were very honest inspiring when telling us about their experiences of racism. We thank them both very much.”
