PRIMARY ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMME CELEBRATES THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS WITH ST JOHNS AMBULANCE

BURTON Albion Community Trust’s Primary Alternative Education programme is celebrating the work it has been undertaking with St John’s Ambulance.

Alternative Education is a programme operated by Burton Albion Community Trust. It works with primary and secondary school aged children who are at risk of temporary and permanent exclusions from school for a variety of reasons. The programme is based around nurture and enrichment with the main aim of reintegrating the students into mainstream education.

KS2 have been working alongside St John’s Ambulance in order to complete their first aid course. Following on from this, earlier this week, Primary Alternative Education had a paramedic visit where they demonstrated great skills which they have learnt which included putting Lisa into the recovery position, dealing with choking and how to make 999 calls.  They all gained a certificate at the end of the course.

Lisa Allen, Primary Alternative Education Lead said: “The students have loved the first aid course and have really engaged in this over the past term. They have asked some very mature questions and enjoyed the practical element of the sessions. They were amazed they could easily put grown ups into the recovery position to potentially save lives while they wait for the ambulance to arrive. It was great to end the course with a paramedic coming to visit them in session, the children were very excited. Hopefully these new found skills will stay with them if ever needed”.
